Resources for College Students

Information about preparing for internships, jobs, and graduate school in Computer Science.

Computer Science Textbooks

There is a growing movement for creating high-quality free or low cost textbooks that are available online. Here are textbooks I have used in my classes.

• Python for Everybody by Charles Severance. This site has a book, video lessons, and other materials for learning programming in Python.
• Java, Java, Java: Object Oriented Problem Solving by Ralph Morelli and Ralph Walde. An introduction to programming textbook using an objects first approach with Java.
• Java Structures by Duane A. Bailey. This is a Data Structures in Java textbook
• Operating Systems: Three Easy Pieces (also known as OSTEP) by Remzi H. Arpaci-Dusseau and Andrea C. Arpaci-Dusseau.
• Distributed Systems, 3rd Edition by Maarten van Steen and Andrew S. Tanenbaum.

Computer Science Professional Organizations

• ACM: the world's largest educational and scientific computing society. Members have access to online learning materials, magazines, and newsletters that provide information about current events and research in computer science. The ACM Career & Job Center is useful for students who are looking for internships and full-time jobs.
• IEEE: a world-wide professional organization for engineering, computing, and technology. Members have access to materials for keeping technically current, career resources, and networking opportunities.

Self-Directed Learning

• w3schools.com: free tutorials and reference information for web development including HTML, SQL, PHP, and more. This is the resource I use for learning new web development skills.
• edX: online courses contributed by universities and other institutions from around the world. Many of the courses are free.
